Thousands of people attend a candlelight vigil for victims of the Chinese government’s brutal military crackdown three decades ago on protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square at Victoria Park in Hong Kong . Hong Kong is the only region under Beijing’s jurisdiction that holds significant public commemorations of the 1989 crackdown and memorials for its victims. Hong Kong has a degree of freedom not seen on the mainland as a legacy of British rule that ended in 1997. June 4th marked the 30th Anniversary of The Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing, China, and it’s always a solemn and sad day of remembrance for the film producer and director Trudie Styler. Styler, produced the award winning documentary, Moving the Mountain, about the courageous Chinese students and student leaders, many of whom died trying to bring democracy to communist China in 1989.

Civilians with rocks stand on a government armored vehicle near Chang’an Boulevard in Beijing as violence escalated between pro-democracy protesters and Chinese troops, leaving hundreds dead overnight. The legacy of the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square looms larger in Hong Kong than in mainland China, where the Communist Party has virtually erased all public mention of it. In this former British colony, hundreds of thousands attend candlelight vigils each anniversary to commemorate the grim end to the Beijing movement that was vanquished before many of the pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong’s streets were even born
