The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Yang attended Columbia and Brown, became a corporate lawyer for a short time, then got into startups. His first was called Stargiving, which aimed to “raise money for celebrity-affiliated nonprofits.” He eventually became the CEO of test prep company Manhattan GMAT, then starting the companies Venture for America, Kickboard, and ShapeUp. As a presidential candidate, his platform is universal basic income, which gives every adult in the United States ages 18 to 64 a $1000 check per month, no strings attached.
