Kate Winslet and Slumgdog Millionaire have continued their awards winning streak by scooping two of the top awards. At the star-studded event in Los Angeles Winslet was named best supporting actress for her Oscar-nominated role in The Reader. Meanwhile, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire won the ensemble cast prize – the guild’s equivalent of a best picture award. Also on the night, Meryl Streep walked away with the best actress gong for her part in Doubt and Sean Penn was named best actor for Milk – both categories they have also been Oscar nominated for. Late actor Heath Ledger received the best supporting actor award for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. In the TV categories, House star Hugh Laurie won the best actor in a drama series award. 30 Rock won the best comedy ensemble prize and two of its stars, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, were also recognised. The guild’s lifetime achievement award was presented to James Earl Jones – the veteran actor who was the voice of Darth Vader.
