On April 27 a gunman walked into the Chabad of Poway and started firing during a service on the last day of Passover. Four people were injured and rushed to the hospital but, one person died. The incident took place six months to the day since 11 people were killed during a mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018. Shortly after the 11:23 am attack at Poway, a suspect was arrested and taken into custody. Steve Haus, the grief-stricken mayor of the town made a passionate statement about the incident at a press conference shortly afterwards. Telling the waiting media that “this is not Poway,” he added, “The Poway I know comes together as we did just a few weeks ago in an interfaith event. We always walk with our arms around each other and we will walk through this tragedy with our arms around each other.” He was adamant that Poway will remain “strong.”
