Demi Lovato, 25, took to Instagram stories on late Tuesday night [Oct. 17] to share a shocking before and after photo of herself — one snap of her extremely thin, and another snap of her, now; as results from an eating disorder. “Recovery is possible,” she captioned the side-by-side mirror selfies. Both photos were immensely dissimilar. Demi revealed the progress she has made in her on-going battle with an eating disorder. She’s been very open about her struggles with bulimia, which began when she was a small child. Demi’s also admitted that both her mother and grandmother struggled with bulimia. Demi revealed that her body image battle was existent long before she was diagnosed with bulimia. She recalled looking down at her stomach as a kid, wondering if it would ever be flat, in a 2016 interview with American Way magazine for American Airlines“Even though I was 2 or 3 years old, being around somebody who was 80 pounds and had an active eating disorder…it’s hard not to grow up like that,” she said. Demi eventually checked into rehab in 2010 [at age 18], after years of battling drug and alcohol addictions, bipolar disorder and an eating disorder.

While Demi has been very open about her past struggles, as well as being an activist for health and body positivity, she’s getting even more candid in a new documentary —  Simply Complicated. The doc, which premiered on YouTube on Tuesday [Oct. 17], dives deep into her past with never-before-seen home videos and revealing discussions. “When I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and then I end up binging and I don’t know how to figure out how to be alone,” she tells her manager in the documentary. “One thing that I haven’t fully conquered is my eating disorder.”

Simply Complicated takes an in-depth look at the making of her latest album, Tell Me You Love Me, her on-going battle with an eating disorder and her life post-breakup from her ex, Wilmer Valderama. Demi also talks about her sexuality and how she dates both men and women. The doc, which took seven months to film, highlights other struggles from her past, including, bullying and bipolar disorder.
