As Donald Trump's presidential campaign heats up, allegations from his marriage to Ivana Trump are coming back to light. In the early 90s, Donald was accused of 'raping' his then-wife -- shocking claims which his lawyer is now vehemently denying because 'you cannot rape your spouse.' Donald Trump's, 69, past may be coming back to haunt him as he continues his run for president! In the 1993 book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives Of Donald J. Trump, details from the politician's divorce from Ivana Trump were revealed, including a deposition in which she alleged he raped her. Now, Donald's lawyer is tasked with shooting down the 'rape' claims.
Lost Tycoon describes a violent incident between Ivana and Donald. “According to version she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, ‘he raped me,'” the book’s author wrote. But Trump’s lawyer, Mark Cohen, is making it clear that the situation, albeit aggressive, cannot be considered rape.
“It’s not the word you’re trying to make it into,” he told The Daily Beast. “She felt raped emotionally. She was not referring to it [as] a criminal matter, and not in the literal sense, though there’s many literal senses to the word. You cannot rape your spouse. There’s very clear case law.”
Indeed, at the time, Ivana clarified her deposition statements for the book. “During a deposition given by me in connection with my matrimonial case, I stated that my husband raped me. On one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage. As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited towards me, was absent. I referred to this as a ‘rape,’ but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”
Donald and Ivana’s divorce was finalized in 1991, but the former Apprentice host hasn’t been shy about publicly discussing race ever since. In fact, while announcing his candidacy for president in June, he referred to Mexicans as “rapist” during an aggressive rant.
Regardless of his controversial past and comments, though, Donald is still leading the pack of GOP contenders, with 18% support in the most recent polls, according to CNN. Are you shocked, HollywoodLifers? Or do you think Donald really has a chance?
