Ella Hunt
Ella Hunt stars as Sue Gilbert alongside Hailee Steinfeld in the Apple TV+ series ‘Dickinson.’ The show premieres Nov. 1. The new series explores the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet Emily Dickinson, who was mostly unpublished during her life. Sue is Emily’s best friend and the love of her life. ‘Dickinson’ will explore the beautiful relationship between Sue and Emily over the course of the season. Even though the series is set in the 19th century, creator Alena Smith has put a modern spin on the show that makes it relatable for this millennial generation. Before ‘Dickinson,’ Ella’s breakout role was in the 2018 musical comedy ‘Anna & The Apocalypse.’ She also played Ellie Marsden in the ITV comedy series ‘Cold Feet.’ Ella is a star on the rise, so don’t look away. Ella Hunt On Sue & Emily’s Bond
Ella said she was ‘really enchanted by how similar it is to friendships these days. They’re bonding over all of the same things that girls today bond over, like a need for intellectual stimulation and to be seen as equals to men. I also thought what was so special about their friendship is that Sue is sort of darkness personified when we meet her, and Emily is the lightness to Sue’s darkness.’
Ella Hunt On Researching For ‘Dickinson’
Ella said she researched female friendships in the 1800s for preparation. She said she learned that ‘women during that time were actively encouraged to form almost romantic bonds with their friends.’
Ella Hunt On Sue & Emily’s Love Story
Ella opened up about Sue and Emily’s ‘really special’ story. ‘I think when I got on set to shoot the intimate stuff, what I was so surprised by was our first director David Gordon Green and his delicacy around it. He wasn’t trying to tell a story about sexuality. He was trying to tell the story about intimacy and the discovery of intimacy. I think that’s so important to be telling on screen,’ she said.
Ella Hunt On The ‘Dickinson’ Love Triangle
Sue ends up marrying Emily’s brother, Austin. ‘I think I enjoyed exploring what Austin was for Sue as well,’ Ella told HL. ‘He was stability and loyalty. As the show progresses, that’s a really lovely storyline, too.’
Ella Hunt On Working With Hailee Steinfeld
Ella had nothing but great things to say about her co-star. ‘Hailee is a spectacular actress and person. Right from the start of shooting, she was so open to collaborating and letting things flow and grow and develop,’ Ella said.
Ella Hunt On ‘Dickinson’s Message
Ella revealed what she wants viewers to take away from the series: ‘I hope that any person watching the show who feels like they have something to say, whether it’s creatively or in any kind of field, feels like they are able to go out and do it.’
