George Zimmerman became international infamous in 2012 after he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin while working as a neighborhood watch coordinator in a Florida gated community.  Zimmerman shot the young black man after an altercation, even though Martin was unarmed and was simply visiting relatives in the area.

Zimmerman contested throughout his trial that he acted in self-defense against the young man at on July 13, 2013 jury acquitted Zimmerman of the charges of second degree murder and manslaughter. The outcry over this decision was incredibly intense and the case as a whole sparked a national discussion about civil rights and gun ownership.

Here, we’ll look back at the trial and recent photos of George since his acquittal. This photo, taken in 2015, shows Zimmerman walking out the intake building at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility with a bondsman, in Sanford, Fla. , after posting bail on a $150,000 bond on a second degree murder charge in April 2012.
