Joe Biden started his career as an attorney, later elected to the Senate in 1972, becoming the sixth-youngest senator in United States history. He was elected to Congress six times, and was the fourth most senior senator when he resigned to become vice president for Barack Obama in 2009. As a senator, Biden became chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and also served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He’s known for dealing with issues like drug policy, and for advocating for women; he helped pass the Violence Against Women Act.
In his personal life, Biden suffered unimaginable loss. His wife and young daughter were killed in a car accident in 1972, just weeks after he was elected to the Senate; his sons, Beau and Hunter Biden, survived. Beau Biden sadly died in 2015 of brain cancer. Though Joe was expected to run for president in the 2016 election, he declined, citing the need to deal with his grief.
Biden announced in 2019 that he would be running for president in the 2020 election, which he ended up winning. Biden replaced Donald Trump in office in Jan. 2021.
