The Matrix Resurrections, the long-awaited fourth film in the groundbreaking franchise, has finally hit theaters! The new movie reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in their iconic roles, Neo and Trinity, as the pair tries to navigate and survive a totally different reality than the one they know as home.
They are joined by Matrix alum Jada Pinkett Smith, reprising her role as Niobe, as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking over the character Morpheus, made famous in the first trilogy by Laurence Fishburne. Newcomers Priyanka Chopra, Christina Ricci and Jonathan Groff also join the star-studded cast.
Lana Wachowski will be directing the feature from her own screenplay, marking the first time she will be helming a Matrix film without her sister, Lilly Wachowski. The pair wrote and directed all three of the previous installments. The first of the franchise, 1999’s The Matrix, made over $460 million worldwide and walked away with four Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Sound Editing.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Cast & Crew Arrive At Premiere

The event was held at San Francisco’s iconic Castro theater. Director Lana talked about her love for the city with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere. “I love San Francisco. I love this theater,” she said of the historic 1,400-seat theatre.
Lana added that she’d “seen so many important films” at the Castro, which was also home to the premiere of her first film, ‘Bound’, 27-years ago. “It was such an extraordinary experience, and that was a touchstone moment in my life. I thought it would be nice to come back here, give something back to the city, give some energy to the city and say thank you to the city. This theater seemed like the perfect place.”

Lana said even her lead Keanu was stunned by ‘The Matrix: Ressurections’ when he first screened the whole film. Talking at the Berlin International Literature Festival in Sep. 2021, she said, “We showed the film to Keanu and he really was blown away by it. And he said something that was typically Keanu, where it’s incredibly insightful. And he’s just sort of sitting there and you don’t expect some incredible revelation to come out of him in that moment, but like, casual brilliance just sort of rolls off of Keanu.”

In the film, she reprises the role of her character Niobe, but she has aged many years since the originals. To get into character Jada had to sit for makeup for 5 hours a day. Talking about the experience, she told GamesRadar, “It was quite an experience, it took about five hours each day to have it put on, and then, to have to sit in it all day was something else. It’s just like, ‘Oh my goodness!'”
“But what I loved about it was that it gave me an opportunity to really immerse myself into another version of Niobe. Not to give too much away, but a woman in that stage of her life, who is still in the position that she’s in, it’s pretty awesome, it’s pretty dope. You don’t see that a lot.”
