Different perfume types
There are five different types of perfumes and each one has a different fragrance oil concentration. This means some of the fragrances will stay on your skin longer than others. These different perfumes include:
Parfum
Parfum has between 15% and 40% perfume oil concentration. This is the strongest of the perfumes, meaning you will not need to use much to get long-lasting effects. A dab should last the entire day.
Eau de parfum
This type of perfume has less perfume oil, of between 10% to 15% fragrance oil concentration. One application should last between six and eight hours.
Eau de toilette
Eau de toilette has between 4% and 15% fragrance oil concentration. This type of perfume will last between two and four hours so you will need to top it up throughout the day. It is a great option to wear in the office, as it will not have an extremely strong scent.
Eau de Cologne
Eau de Cologne has become a product more marketed towards men, mostly consisting of masculine fragrances. However, technically the name Eau de Cologne is simply a descriptor of the concentration of fragrance oil. It contains between 2% and 4% fragrance oil. The fragrance will remain on your skin for up to three hours.
Eau de Fraiche
Eau de Fraiche is lightly fragranced water. It is refreshing on a warm day but the scent will not last longer than an hour or so.
Types of scent
When the different aspects of ascent are described, they are called notes. There are several distinct notes found in perfumes. These in include floral notes, oriental notes, woody notes, and fresh notes.
Floral notes
Floral notes’ smell will remind you of spring. They can be split into several subcategories including:
- Floral: Smells like fresh cut flowers. This is the closest to pure floral you will find.
- Soft floral: Smells like flowers mixed with aldehydes and powdery notes
- Floral oriental: Smells like flowers mixed with orange blossom, and sweet spices
Oriental Notes
Oriental notes are generally musky and warm. They can be split into the following subcategories:
- Soft oriental: Smells like orange blossom and sweet spices. Similar to Christmassy fragrances.
- Oriental: Oriental has a sweet musky scent sometimes with a little vanilla.
- Woody oriental: This note has a warm scent of sandalwood and patchouli.
Woody notes
Woody notes can be smoky and earthy. They are used in feminine fragrances but are most dominant in male fragrances. They can be split into the following categories:
- Woods: Has a smokiness to it, as well as an earthy wooden scent.
- Mossy woods: Smells like oakmoss and amber.
- Dry woods: Has a leathery scent combined with wood.
Fresh notes
Fresh notes incorporate a large variety of fragrances. They can be split into the following categories:
- Aromatic: This category incorporates several herbs from lavender to mint
- Citrus: Citrus notes smell like citrus fruits and bergamot
- Water: This may sound like it will smell odorless like water, but it has more of a salty freshness to it. It is mostly created by an ingredient called Calone.
- Green: Green notes smell like fresh-cut grass and a spicy forest with balsamic elements.
- Fruity: Fruity incorporates any fruit other than lemons, limes, orange, clementine, and grapefruits, which would be considered citrus.
