Lewis Hamilton made history on November 15, 2020, winning the Formula 1 DHL Turkish Grand Prix 2020. It made him a seven time Forumula one world chamption, tying German Michael Schumacher’s all-time record. Since Schumacher was critically injuried in a 2013 skiing accident, Lewis can likely pull ahead for an eight world championship and all-time glory. He is also the first Black racer to ever win a F-1 world championship.
Because Lewis is one of the only Black racers on the circuit, he has sadly been a victim of racist taunts by crowds during the earlier years of his career. As a result, he is one only racer who has spoken up for the Black Lives Matter movement. Following the May 2020 killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, he called out his sport, writing on Instagram: “I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice. Not a sign from anybody in my industry which of course is a white dominated sport. I’m one of the only people of color there yet I stand alone.”
