Few athletes ever make it to the Olympics, and even fewer get to play in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Eddy Alvarez will get to do just that during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The baseball player will compete in the Olympics as part of Team USA’s baseball team, but it’s his second time at the Olympics. The former Miami Marlins shortstop first competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as part of the U.S. speed-skating team. As part of the speed-skating team, he won the silver medal. In 2021, he was selected to be a flag bearer as part of Team USA in the opening ceremony.
After the 2014 Olympics, Eddy shifted focus and put his attention on baseball. He started his career playing for the Chicago White Sox’s minor-league teams, before he was traded to the Marlins’ organization in 2019. He briefly played for the Marlins in the 2020 season, but he currently plays for the Triple-A team: the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
