Skylar Grey Visits HollywoodLife
Skylar Grey visited HollywoodLife to promote her concept album Angel With Tattoos, which is currently available on Spotify. The singer-writer had her career breakthrough when she wrote Eminem and Rihanna’s top-charting hit “Love the Way You Lie.” She went on to get signed to Interscopt Records and tour with Eminem, singing Rihanna’s part on the road. Skylar has also written huge hits “Good Life” by G-Eazy and Kehlani, “Glorious” by Macklemore, “Clarity” by Zedd and “I Need A Doctor” by Dr. Dre and Eminem. Now, focused on her own music, the singer-songwriting revealed that she’s returning to her folky roots with a concept album, Angel With Tattoos. Skylar revealed that she would be adding to an open-ended playlist as she continues to write and produce songs in the same style — with influences by Carol King and Stevie Knicks.

On Her Open-Ended Project
“I just feel like in this digital age you don’t have to be limited to a length of time. As I write songs in this feel, I’m just going to keep adding. So, who knows? It could end up with a hundred songs, it could stop at five.”
On How Writing For Rappers Helped Her As An Artist
“Doing hooks for raps songs has been awesome, but it doesn’t show like the full spectrum of what I want to do. I’ve learned so much as a songwriter working in different genres, but now I’m applying all those things that I’ve learned to this style, in terms of storytelling. I’ve definitely learned a lot from working with Eminem when it comes to songwriting and storytelling.”

On Writing ‘Everything I Need’ From ‘Aquaman’
“I was approached by the director to write the end title and when I got the storyline and saw some of the scenes, I felt compelled to ask Elliott (Skylar’s fiancé) to help me write it because it felt like we could really relate to the story being told in the movie. Now, I don’t really like writing songs without him to be honest, because I love bouncing things off of him and he has such good, fresh perspective on things.”
On Being An Independent Artist
“I can make my own calls on when I put out music and what, and it’s really exciting. It’s refreshing to just have total freedom to have to get the approvals of all these different people to put out a song.”
On Writing For Herself Vs. Another Artist
“Sometimes I don’t have the inspiration coming to me freely, so if somebody is like, I need this, this and that in a song, that’s what inspires me. But then it’s also important when I do have my own inspiration to follow that path, too.”
On Proposing To Her Fiancé Elliot Taylor
“Yeah, I proposed to him. I got down on one knee, got him a diamond.”
On Being A Chameleon
“I feel like it’s a really good time for me, the chameleon to be an artist. Everybody’s kind of venturing into different worlds, and I get bored if I stay in one place too long.”
