Paris is undoubtedly one of the world’s fashion capitals. From Louis Vuitton to Chanel, dozens of luxurious fashion designers have roots in the ancient city, and French fashion seems to flourish daily. Sonia Rykiel is one of France’s most legendary designers, and she is celebrated every day in the fashion industry. Born in 1930, Rykiel was the creator of the ‘Poor Boy Sweater’, a style she created when she was pregnant in 1962 and couldn’t find something to wear to suit her baby bump. Talk about legendary!
From the birth of the Poor Boy Sweater, Sonia continued to invent numerous other fashion techniques, and expanded her brand all over the world. Sadly, as she aged into her 80’s Sonia developed Parkinson’s disease, which led her to her death in such as here, where she walked at her own show in Paris in 2002. Proudly Accepting The Commander of Arts & Letters Award
It came as no surprise when Sonia Rykiel was awarded the Commander of the Arts and Letters in Paris, in October 2012. Many highly regarded French citizens have historically been given the award, including French businessman Pierre Berge, and it was presented by the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe. The award is a very high honor, and Rykiel was more than deserving of it.
Shining At The Globes Of Cristal Awards
Sonia was a bright light on the red carpet at the Globes of Cristal Awards for Art and Culture, in Paris in 2009. She graced the paparazzi wearing all black and draped in designer garments, and she rocked a studded and fringed handbag for a pop of style.
Hitting The Runway Arm-In-Arm With A Model
Sonia Rykiel hit the runway like the natural she was, while having her arm around a model who was showing off her own designs at the Sonia Rykiel show for Men’s Spring and Summer Pret-a-Porter Collection in 2005. The model was surely honored to walk the catwalk with such a highly-regarded style icon!
Flaunting Fur And Looking Fabulous In London
Sonia Rykiel looked like a fashion queen as she slayed in a fur coat at a party in England, celebrating the Sonia Rykiel shop opening on Bond Street in London, in December 2002. Bond Street is one of London’s top fashion neighborhoods, so naturally her boutique there fit right in. We’ll never forget this legendary fashion mogul!
